Kermit the Frog is wrong. It IS Easy Being Green. You may wonder, ‘Why should I recycle?” While some may simply say, "Recycling is the right thing to do," others view it as a conservation issue. Recycling is a great way to protect and enhance the earth’s limited resources. Still others see it as a way to help organizations and people in need. Recycling is a good idea for many reasons, but most of all by reducing waste and reusing materials you are making a difference in the world. When you have the support of the community, recycling is easy. And fun. You can make new friends while visiting the recycling center. You can go on a treasure hunt during your next trip to the grocery store, and look for new products that come in recyclable containers. Or discover your creative side with recycling art projects. Make colorful wrapping paper from old calendars and magazines. The possibilities are endless, and the rewards are immeasurable. By reducing your waste output, you can make a significant impact. Many local groups and individuals have taken on the task of promoting recycling and helping others get started. Read their stories below. Perhaps you have a story to share about how you're working to make Starkville green. We would like to hear your story. Contact us. First Presbyterian ChurchEvery first Saturday of the month, between 9 and 11 a.m., you will find a committed group of First Presbyterian church members helping people unload and sort their recycables at the Starkville Recycling Center on C.C. Clark Road. First Presbyterian members have been supporting recycling since 2004. Their goal is to reduce waste and encourage greener habits in our community. Plantation Homes Curbside recycling actually exists in Starkville; at least in one neighborhood. Charlotte Fuquay, a resident of Plantation Homes, is one of the most dedicated people you will find when it comes to recycling. Along with other neighborhood volunteers, Ms. Fuquay is working to engage their neighborhood in recycling. Once a month, the residents of Plantation Homes put their recyclables out on the street, and the dedicated group of volunteers pick them up and load them into the Starkville Recycling bins. This is one service we would like for every resident in our city to enjoy. |
