What Green Starkville is All AboutWe do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. --Native American Proverb
Being green is about being healthy; the health of us as individual and as a society and in turns the health of the future generations and the Earth. Global warming might be a major concern of many of us these days, but it is not the driving force of our efforts in establishing the Green Starkville Organization. We realize that we live in a world where chemicals, pesticides, and processed foods are status quo. Every household has more than eight pounds of cleaners and other hazardous chemicals. Our meals are made from boxes or fast food restaurants. Our fruits and vegetables--some being genetically engineered--are covered in pesticides and our meat and poultry is full of growth hormones and antibiotics. And all of it ends up polluting our bodies and weakening our defenses.
Choosing a green lifestyle is about making healthier choices for our bodies and, in turn, for our environment. A green lifestyle promotes sustainability and healthier living. Sustainability is often defined as "to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." This implies conserving resources, minimizing waste, reducing toxic products and materials, reusing what we have, and recycling what we cannot reduce or reuse. All these actions promote a healthier ecosystem and healthier living for us and our children. Even from a religious perspective, God has charged us to be good stewards of the Earth, being responsible for maintaining its natural resources for future generations so they may thrive economically, socially, and spiritually.
The mission of Green Starkville is to inform and educate our Starkville community about green choices and alternatives for everyday task; share the knowledge about health risks associated with hazardous chemicals we bring to our homes and foods and drugs we put in our bodies; bring awareness to environmental issues in our community that has an impact on our health as individuals; help policy and decision makers make greener decisions that will improve the health of our community; and empower and inspire others to change their lifestyle to a greener, healthier one by taking simple, well informed actions.
