Understanding the IssueOn Nov. 16, 2010 the Starkville Board of Alderman was presented with a plan to purchase trash carts that has the potential of saving the city over $600,000 over the next 10 years, and accepted a garbage bag bid of $4.19 a roll, which tops last year's $3.80 a roll bid by voting 4-2 with Parker and Dumas opposing. More details in the Starkville Daily News and the Commercial Dispatch.
Why carts are better than bags:- Cost savings. Prices of trash bags will continue to increase. Bins/Carts are a one time purchase and if maintained well will last for 10+ years
- The proposed trash carts have wheels which are easier to roll to the curb
- Beautification and improvement of city appeal
- Bins are easier to manage and garbage collection truck are designed to left them which means less chances of injuries for workers and safer work environment
